Winter in Oahu – Some of the Best Times to Visit
November, December, and January; some of the best times to visit the Hawaiian Islands. Some of the best snorkeling, surfing and swimming can be found during these months but you might also find a little chillier weather than in the dead of summer. If you’re not a big heat loving fan, these are some of the best months to visit and consider making Hawaii your permanent home.
During these winter months many people flock to warmer clients including Hawaii, Honolulu and Waikiki. In Hawaii, these winter months do still bring storms with big waves and big surf competitions. But this also means the time for safe swimming beaches. During the summer months there can be long “sets” between waves which can trick swimmers into thinking that the water is calm. They might be having a great time and all of a sudden a large wave or strong currents can come along out of nowhere.
Are those like the ones at Waikiki with big rock walls that block the surf. Natural rock barriers like those that Three Tables on Oahu’s North Shore are also ideal since the rock formations protect the beach from large waves.
One of the nice things about Hawaii is our year-round temperatures which range from about 70° to 85°. June through October has the warmest weather but even in the winter and 80° day is not that unusual. Evenings are about 10° cooler but December and January usually see the heaviest rainfall. Island like Maui and Kauai are much wetter and will see more rainfall and then the big Island or Oahu. Also the Ko Olina coast and Honolulu Waikiki Beach of the sunniest spots with the Northeast seeing more rain. Our highest peak season for tourists ranges from December through April with prime travel times during the last two weeks of December. If you’re planning a holiday trip it’s best to book as much in advance as possible.
For events, December see some of the most amazing surf competitions such as the World Tour Pipeline Masters championship surf competition as well as the Honolulu Marathon. [Source]
